Critical Minerals at the Core of National Security

As India advances towards becoming a global manufacturing and energy powerhouse, the importance of a strong domestic metals and mining ecosystem has never been greater. Rising demand from infrastructure, electrification, and clean energy is converging with national priorities around critical mineral security and supply-chain independence, positioning the sector at the heart of India’s growth story.

Vedanta response

Out of 15+ commodities that we operate in, we have presence in 9 minerals are critical to the global energy transition goal. Vedanta is steadfast in its contribution towards development of critical mineral ecosystem in India as well as globally. With a rich portfolio of long-life assets, we are expanding organically across Aluminium, Zinc, Silver, Nickel and Copper.

Vedanta is also continuously evaluating any opportunities for securing critical mineral value chains and making further efforts towards full integration. We have secured 10 critical mineral blocks spanning Copper, Nickel, Tungsten, Graphite and others auctioned as Composite Licenses by the Ministry of Mines, which are at various stages of exploration and statutory clearances. During FY 2025-26, Vedanta was declared preferred bidder for a manganese block CL while HZL secured 2 additional blocks.

Propelling Sustainability Adaptation

Mining companies are positioned to lead in sustainability by swiftly implementing comprehensive ESG strategies. Adopting pioneering sustainability practices and undertaking collaborative efforts across the value chain can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation and create a credible transition.

Vedanta response

Vedanta is committed to achieving Net Zero by 2050, supported by a planned investment of US$ 5 billion during this decade. We are advancing our clean energy transition through the deployment of ~1,906 MW of renewable energy capacity, with an ambition to secure 2.5 GW of round-the-clock renewable power by 2030, positioning us among the world’s largest renewable energy consumers. We are also pioneering sustainable logistics within the mining sector through the deployment of battery-operated electric vehicles in underground mining operations, reducing emissions while driving operational innovation.

Our sustainability agenda extends beyond carbon reduction. Three of our businesses have achieved water positivity, reinforcing our commitment to responsible water stewardship and resource conservation. In biodiversity conservation, we have planted nearly 4 million trees across India as part of our pledge to plant 7 million trees under the World Economic Forum initiative.

Our efforts continue to receive global recognition. Hindustan Zinc and Vedanta Aluminium secured the 1st and 2nd positions respectively among peers in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, with Hindustan Zinc being recognised as a global leader in sustainability. Vedanta consistently monitors diverse internal and external data sources to stay ahead of climate-related developments and evolving physical climate risks.

Our decarbonisation strategy is anchored around four key levers: renewable energy, fuel switching, energy efficiency, and carbon offsets where required. We remain committed to investing in innovative technologies and scalable solutions to reduce emissions while enhancing operational efficiency. Vedanta Limited’s approach to physical and transition risks is comprehensive, proactive, and deeply integrated into its business strategy. Through strong climate governance, ambitious decarbonisation targets, investments in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies, and active stakeholder engagement, Vedanta is not only managing climate-related risks but also positioning itself as a frontrunner in the global energy transition.

Scaling AI to Redefine Operational Performance

AI is rapidly evolving from a productivity enabler to a core pillar of operational excellence in the metals and mining industry. Beyond improving efficiency and output, AI is helping companies enhance safety, strengthen asset reliability, address workforce challenges, bolster cybersecurity, and drive smarter decision-making across the value chain. Organisations that embed AI strategically across their operations will be better positioned to anticipate risks, protect their people, and capitalise on emerging growth opportunities.

Vedanta response

One of the primary technology themes used in Vedanta Groups is asset monitoring, within which computer vision has emerged as a key enabler. Computer vision allows for continuous, real-time observation of critical operational assets and early identification of abnormal conditions. A notable application of this capability is AI-based switchyard monitoring, where vision systems are used to detect thermal hotspots and potential electrical failures.

In parallel, Vedanta is applying AI beyond plant operations into procurement and inventory decision-making, automate purchase decisions, optimise inventory levels, and reduce turnaround times. Running across all these initiatives is a strong and consistent safety-first approach. Vedanta has deployed more than 500 AI-based cameras across the Group for unsafe act detection, surveillance, and man–machine interaction monitoring. These systems move safety management from reactive audits to proactive, real-time prevention.

Taken together, this layered approach – starting from group level technologies, moving into metal and process-specific applications, and reinforced by a strong digital safety backbone, demonstrates how Vedanta converts innovation into a repeatable, scalable, and value generating capability across the enterprise.

T5

Driving Digitally Integrated Operations

Operational technologies and analytical tools are revolutionising decision-making in the mining industry, driving a paradigm change in functions like mining, smelting as well as power plant operations. These technologies enable digital replication of assets, facilitating visualisation and strategic simulation, optimising decisions on investments and processes. This innovative approach, supported by accessible simulation software, maximises value from existing assets.

Vedanta response

Vedanta takes pride in being innovation-led and technology-driven, integrating advanced technologies to enhance the value of existing assets and drive operational efficiency. We are utilising drone-based surveillance technology across applications in open-cast and underground mining operations.

This includes successful implementation of Digital Twin which allows us to create a virtual model of critical assets, facilitating simulation and optimisation of operations. Additionally, we have implemented Advanced Process Control (APC) which uses real-time data and analytics to fine-tune production processes, ensuring maximum efficiency and minimal waste.

We also actively collaborate with established multinationals and vibrant Indian startups to source cutting-edge digital solutions with applications across worker wearable tech, traffic management, equipment health monitoring, operator training and safety supervision. This helps enhance our operational processes with highest safety standards.

T6

Scaling a Growth-Focussed Asset Portfolio

In the pursuit of sustainable growth and quicker access to essential minerals and metals, companies are reevaluating their investment strategies. They are exploring non-traditional avenues like joint ventures (JVs) and strategic alliances to secure resources vital for sustainability and expedite the launch of new production capacities. They must also adopt innovative thinking regarding investment structures potential investors, providers of capital along with governments and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), to facilitate this process and integrate crucial metal supplies into the market more rapidly.

Vedanta response

Vedanta is at the forefront of sustainable development, ensuring timely access to vital minerals and metals. We are innovating our investment strategies, embracing JVs and strategic alliances to secure resources essential for a sustainable future.

These partnerships are key to fast-tracking new production capacities and futuristic application development. We are not confined to conventional investment methods; our approach includes creative investment structures and engaging diverse investors like technology providers, governments, OEMs as well as academia and research institutions. This broadens our resource base and accelerates the integration of crucial supplies into the market.
