CASE STUDY

Expanding Gamsberg’s Scale with Phase II Concentrator

We are progressing one of our most important growth projects to strengthen zinc production and resource conversion at Gamsberg. The Phase II expansion will double mining capacity from 4 MTPA to 8 MTPA and add a new 200 KTPA concentrator plant, taking Gamsberg’s total MIC capacity to 450 KTPA. The project is advancing towards commissioning in FY 2026-27 and stood at nearly 94% completion at the close of FY 2025-26.

Problem statement

The Phase II expansion will strengthen Gamsberg’s position among the leading global mining operations, while creating significant employment during construction and peak operations.

Enhancing the capacity
  • Expanding mining capacity from 4 MTPA to 8 MTPA
  • Constructing a new concentrator plant with 200 KTPA MIC capacity
  • Increasing Gamsberg’s total MIC capacity to 450 KTPA
  • Developing a new tailings dam facility north of the existing Phase I tailings dam
  • Augmenting bulk services, including electricity and water infrastructure
  • Building a 19.5 km transmission line to meet the additional power requirement of 26.2 MVA
  • Developing an additional water reservoir of 8.5 MLD with a clarifier to support Phase II requirements
Execution progress
  • Completed civil work for the plant, with road work currently in progress
  • Completed delivery and installation of all major equipment
  • Commissioned the crusher ore circuit to Phase I
  • Started on-ground execution for the wet TSF, comprising the tailings storage facility and return water dam
  • Completed design for the full TSF complex
  • Completed and commissioned external water infrastructure in May 2024
  • Reached 99% progress on external power infrastructure, with final commissioning and handover to the Eskom grid
  • Additional water reservoir of 8.5 MLD with a clarifier to support Phase II commissioned and put into operation.
Operational momentum
  • Resolved mining challenges through a significant ramp-up in ore production and rock mined
  • Achieved the highest-ever total rock mined of 85.1 MnT in FY 2025-26
  • Delivered MIC production of 185 kt from Gamsberg in FY 2025-26
  • Advanced the project with an estimated investment of US$ 595 million, including IDC
  • Targeting ore charging by July 2026

Way forward

We will continue to advance Phase II execution with a focus on commissioning readiness, infrastructure integration and operational ramp-up. As the project moves towards completion, the expansion is expected to add 200 KTPA of MIC, strengthen Gamsberg’s global production standing and support large-scale employment, with around 2,000 to 2,500 jobs during construction and a further 800 to 1,000 jobs during peak operations.
