Aluminium

Vedanta is the largest aluminium producer in India with a capacity of 2.3 mtpa and a 40% market share in India’s aluminium industry. We have strategically located large scale assets with integrated power from captive power plants in Indian states of Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

Due to Aluminium’s light weight and low cost, the demand for the metal is increasing in India boosted by increased investment in infrastructure, power and transportation. Government programmes such as ‘Make in India’ and ‘Electricity and Housing’ for all, will drive increased demand from the electrical power; transport and construction industries there are opportunities for downstream industry in India to develop value added products, including alloys for defense and automobile applications. Vedanta’s portfolio is focused more on the value added products and demand for its rods, billets and rolled products is likely to increase substantially.

BALCO was incorporated in year 1965 as the first Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) in India and since then it has been closely associated with the Indian Industrial Growth, in a pivotal role. Since our first hot metal tapping in the March of 2008, our aluminium smelting unit at Jharsuguda has come a long way to establish itself as the world’s largest single-location smelter. With an installed capacity of 1.75 MTPA, boasting a run rate of over 1.35 MTPA, Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda currently produces 40% of India’s primary aluminium, occupying a 40% share of the domestic market. Backed by two smelters – 0.5 MTPA and 1.25 MTPA (SEZ) – and two power plants with a combined capacity of 3615 MW, the hot-metal produced at our smelters is cast into ingots, billets, wire rods, slab and alloy ingots. These products are shipped to hundreds of customers across the globe, finding application in a wide range of industries like automobile, aviation, electrical conductors, building & construction, consumer goods, F&B packaging and so on. At Vedanta Ltd., Jharsuguda, we work with the vision to be the best & most preferred producer of primary aluminium globally, that co-exists in perfect harmony with the community that nurtures it. Our facility at Lanjigarh, Odisha is one of the world’s largest single-location integrated alumina refinery complex. Currently, we are operating at 2MTPA of our capacity. We have obtained all regulatory clearances to operate at 2 MTPA. While we have all the necessary approvals in place for capacity expansion, bauxite security will play a crucial role in planning for the future. We are sourcing bauxite domestically from the States of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra and Gujarat besides importing it. Recently, we have been able to do so through the Odisha Mining Corporation with the price being discovered through auction. We adhere to international standards of environment and sustainability. Our credo is ‘Zero Harm’, ‘Zero Waste’ and ‘Zero Discharge’ at our unit. Our Lanjigarh refinery is the first in the country to become a ‘Zero Discharge’ refinery.
